We love living in Surrey as it is definitely a place for families!  Over the last ten years I have watched this City grow with festivals, events, and amenities for families and children to play and prosper.

Cities do best when they invest in their residents with community centres, libraries, the arts, and sports facilities.  The current council was voted in with a set of priorities that included a transportation system and moving to a municipal police force.

Recently the draft budget was released with a number of changes to projects, many of them already in progress with significant investments.  Included in the list of projects to be put on hold: completion of the Cloverdale Sports & Ice Complex, expansion of the Fleetwood Community Centre and Fleetwood Library, Grandview Recreation Centre and Library, the Newton Library expansion and more.

On the City’s own website it touts the benefits of the new Cloverdale Sports Complex:

  • create welcoming arenas with gathering spaces
  • respond to emerging trends in arenas
  • create venue opportunities on site to support large events
  • increase recreation opportunities for ice and dry floor seasons
  • benefit minor sport hockey groups
  • alleviate waitlists for Learn to Skate programs

The Grandview Heights area is rapidly growing with young families.  While there is a swimming pool and fitness centre, there is no community centre or library for young families to visit, gather and meet other families – so important in the foundation for healthy community.

This isn’t just about sports and/or physical activity.  Residents of all ages need the resources and gathering spaces offered through a library and the community programming for arts, music, science and after school activities through a community centre.  It is an investment in our community and key to a healthy city.
