This is also a good opportunity to review some personal safety tips.  Be aware of your surroundings at all times.  Try to walk with friend or family member, but if you have to walk alone, be cautious of wearing earbuds and listening to music.  Keep your cell phone away in a pocket, bag or jacket.  If you do see something or someone suspicious, call the police and get to an area that is populated with people and well lit.
