Is laughter in short supply? Some days it may seem like there is little reason to laugh. Laughter is thought, for one thing, to be a natural response to stress. It can be a simple person to person or persons connection to a real workout for our heart, brain and blood flow that make us feel so good when we laugh. As the philosopher Bertrand Russell once wrote; “Laughter is the most inexpensive and most effective wonder drug. Laughter is a universal medicine.” He may have been on to something. Laughter has shown physiological, psychological, social, spiritual, and quality-of-life benefits. Humour appears to be the main driver behind laughter, but the less obvious reasons are still up for much discussion, debate and research. I’m pretty sure we can agree on one thing; whether you go for a good old bust-a-gut or a simple giggle, laughter feels good. And, then there’s this from Bob Newhart; “Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it and then move on.” Let’s make laughter a bigger priority, let’s look to the lighter side to help us navigate through the angst and uncertainty of the times we live. There is a size and strength for everyone. After all, laughter is the best medicine. Let’s live life laughing!
