Jim Cessford : Candidate for Mayor of Delta

By September 24, 2018General

Jim Cessford, Delta’s former chief of police, is a candidate for the position of Mayor of Delta.  Jim will be running with a team of council candidates who share two important attributes with him: the ability to think critically about complex issues and the courage to act with independence in order to do what is right.  As Jim has been known to say, “If you have a yes-man working for you, one of you is redundant.”

Jim is uniquely suited to the role of Mayor for many more reasons. Over 20 years, Jim has devoted himself in different ways to serving the citizens of Delta.  As police chief, the motto “No call too small” exemplified the high level of policing service enjoyed by residents and businesses.  Surveys rating the police department during Jim’s time as Chief showed an astounding 94% satisfaction rating among the citizens.  Delta was the envy of other cities in BC who looked at Jim’s approach to policing as the model to emulate.

Recognition and honours from government and non-government agencies have been bestowed on Jim for his innovative leadership in police work including becoming a Member of the Order of Merit for Police Forces, presented by the Governor General in Ottawa.  Jim was particularly  honoured to be named Delta’s Citizen of the Year in 2009 in recognition of his professional achievements and community service contributions.

Jim has volunteered in numerous capacities in Delta: coaching youth sports teams; mentoring students; co-chairing NEVR, a network of organizations committed to the elimination of violence in relationships; and serving on the Terry Fox Run organizing committee.

Jim is an independent thinker but he thrives working as part of a team where his leadership, integrity, humour, compassion and ability to connect with others are valued.  These are the qualities that get results and these are the qualities Jim will bring to the council table as Mayor.

Jim has been married for 35 years to his wife Sheila.  They have been active community members while raising 3 children during their 20 years living in Delta.

Jim’s vision, values and proven leadership skills will help ensure that the best of Delta is preserved for future generations while new challenges are met with an unwavering resolve to focus on doing the right thing for the people of Delta.
