My father passed away in July. July 19th to be exact. I obviously remember that day but how surprised I was to get a reminder courtesy of a bill from BC Emergency Health Services last week.

A bill for $50.

The day my father died we never called for an ambulance. We did what we were told to do, call the police non-emergency number. Police arrived first, and after I arrived at my parents I do remember in my state of shock two ambulance attendants quickly coming into my parents residence ands quickly talking to police on scene. Without even acknowledging my mother nor I they quickly walked back out of the home. The total time spent? About 30 seconds.

Two and half months later a bill arrives for $50.

For what, Gas?

I called BC Emergency Health Services and was told I had no choice and had to pay the amount in full. When i asked what happened if I didn’t, I was told a collection agency would come after my father’s estate.

Firstly, I want to thank the good first responders and specifically the police and everyone who helped us on the day of my father’s death. My family are so grateful to the South Surrey RCMP.

What we’re not grateful for is a bill just to have BCEHS show up despite the fact that we never made any phone call for their services.

Charging my father’s estate $50 for absolutely nothing is shameful.
