Today is October 17th.

It will forever be known as the day Marijuana became legal in this country good or bad. (only time will tell) Today will also be forever known to some as the day Canadian music died. The Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie succumbed to brain cancer a year ago today at just 53 years of age. To rock fans in this country, it was and is a devastating day. The Hip meant so much to the inner workings of a Canadian rock fans DNA. They’re the only band to ever to be able to penetrate that far into the psyche’ of everyone who adored the band.

And their leader was Gord Downie.

Gord Downie was a good friend with our Prime Minster. Until his last breath he pushed the PM to do something about the appalling conditions many first nations communities in this country face on a daily basis.

Although Justin Trudeau will probably never admit it with words, if asked if he chose to legalize Marijuana on the anniversary of Gord’s death – maybe he will never say whether he did it on purpose or not, from my experience of being in a smoke filled Hip dressing room on a number of occasions, my guess is that October 17th marijuana became legal in this country because of one man.

Gord Downie.
