With former mayor, Doug McCallum, councillor Bruce Hayne and councillor Tom Gill all promising new measures to make Surrey more accountable and transparent, “it seems positively surreal,” stated Proudly Surrey Council candidate, Parshotam Gill, “As an entrepreneur, I have dealt with Doug’s administration and with the Hepner administration, in which Bruce and Tom played important leadership roles. It is unbelievable that the people who created this opaque, unaccountable system are now putting themselves forward as the people to fix it.”

“Now that is not to say that their parties’ platforms do not contain many great ideas about how to improve any number of policies; I recognize some because they are lifted from ours. But how can voters actually trust these claims? We can promise better policies but I think voters are sick of words and words alone; words, by themselves do not make change,” Goel continued. “That’s why we are going to show our good faith through action.”

Council candidate Felix Kongyuy elaborated, “We were impressed with Vancouver mayoral candidate Kennedy Stewart’s pledge to publicly release his donors list at regular intervals until election day, to showcase the transparency he hopes to bring to City Hall. We are following his lead and adopting that policy.”

“As a father and grandfather, I have long observed that the best way to improve others’ behaviour is to model it oneself. So today, I am challenging the other major Surrey parties and slates, Surrey First, Integrity Now and Safe Surrey to do the same. If they can’t deliver transparency on the campaign trail, I don’t see much chance of them delivering it in government,” Goel concluded.
