With recreational marijuana legal of Wednesday are South of the Fraser cities ready?

Speaking to Pulse Mornings last week City of Langley Mayoral Candidate Peter Fassebender says he expects there will be some growing pains to start.

“I don’t think we’re totally ready, I don’t think anybody is,”said Fassbender. “The reality is it’s now law and we need to deal with it and that’s  going to be the job of council when it comes to our zoning and bylaws and so on.”

Valeria van den Broek, who is also running for Mayor, agreed saying if elected she will look to other jurisdictions for guidance on fines and bylaws.

“I think it we keep good communication between us and the federal government and provincial government as well as other cities and seeing what’s working for them and what’s not working for them that’s the best way to go.”

Marijuana retail sales remain banned in Langley with residents only allowed to smoke up on private property.

An amendment to allow smoking in public spaces was brought to the table at a council meeting in July.

The city is still waiting for the green light from Fraser Health.
