The sea of school board Trustee candidates can leave many voters wondering who has the experience, passion, and dedication to best lead our school district. To answer that question Surrey Students NOW has provided a new link on our website demonstrating our actions in the community.

We stepped up as a group and began to advocate over two years ago with the red signs saying “Our schools are over capacity – where will your kids go?” after being frustrated with the apathy and silence of the current Trustees. The work outlined on our website is proof of our commitment and demonstrates how we have engaged, built relationships, and supported our students because Surrey kids matter.

Cindy Dalglish, a stalwart advocate, has been lauded by Surrey Now-Leader newspaper Editor Beau Simpson, “If only Surrey had a few thousand more Cindy Dalglish’s” for creating awareness and pushing for development to be in line with infrastructure.

Charlene Dobie has dedicated herself to the promotion and creation of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians. She has received an award from Experiences Canada for her exceptional leadership and dedication to youth through SEVEC’s Youth Exchanges Canada program.

Mary-Em Waddington’s work with BC Technology for Learning Society has placed over 300 refurbished computers into the districts Welcome Centre to assist new immigrant and refugee families continue their studies, look for work, and communicate with family back home. She has also sat as the Chair of Canadian Parents for French Surrey chapter and spoke to the Senate of Canada on the effects capping French Immersion has had on Surrey students.

Sonia Andhi founded the Shakti Society fifteen years ago. This annual awards gala recognizes women’s achievements in academics, the arts, athletics, business, public service and human resilience. The inaugural Shakti Film Festival screening 10 to 15 productions will launch on Oct. 14. “They’ll not necessarily be South Asian,” Andhi said, “we welcome men who show women as real characters and avoid the stereotypes.”
