Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) B.C. Director Kris Sims released the following statement in response to Prime Minister Trudeau’s carbon tax announcement this morning:

“It’s very disappointing that the Prime Minister continues to force a carbon tax on to Canadians who are saying no and voting against it, while citing British Columbia as an example of a ‘successful’ carbon tax. Everyday people in B.C. are paying hundreds of extra tax dollars a year just to drive to work, heat their homes and buy their food. We were promised that the B.C. carbon tax would be ‘revenue neutral’ and we now know that it isn’t true. The B.C. carbon tax grab goes straight into the government’s general coffers and they keep jacking it up every single year. Now the rest of Canada is being threatened with the same thing.”

Federal Director Aaron Wudrick also responded to Trudeau’s federal carbon tax plan:

“Today’s announcement shows that the Prime Minister is choosing to ignore growing opposition to his ill-advised carbon tax. Trying to buy Canadians off by sending them cheques merely shows that he already knows how unpopular his new tax will be. Creating a new tax is not how you save Canadians money.

Canadians understand that climate change is a global issue and that we should not be punishing ourselves with a new tax that will have no impact on global carbon emissions.”

The CTF has long opposed carbon taxes across Canada and will continue to be an aggressive voice for the growing number of Canadians opposed to carbon tax grabs. We invite them to sign the CTF’s petition opposing the federal government’s carbon tax which can be found here: https://www.taxpayer.com/resource-centre/petitions/petition?tpContentId=154
