Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart says the city won’t be switching to a local police force anytime soon if re-elected.

Stewart dropped by the Pulse FM Studios for a Coquitlam Mayors candidate conversation on Monday ahead of the October 20th municipal election.

During the conversation Pulse Mornings Ian Power mentioned how there’s talks in Surrey of switching to a local police force and would Coquitlam ever do the same?

Stewart, who is seeking a third term, said the move doesn’t make sense.

“The RCMP have shown to be about one third less costly than a regional police force. I’ve talked to Mayors like Port Moody and New Westminster and the grass isn’t greener on that side of the fence.”

What do you think?

Is Stewart’s claim of the RCMP costing less  a good enough reason for Surrey to stay with a national police force?
